Helen Diller Institute for Jewish Law and Israel Studies at UC Berkeley

The Institute for Jewish Law and Israeli Law, Economy and Society is an interdisciplinary initiative coordinated with a 15-member faculty advisory committee from units across campus, including law, economics, business, political science, history, sociology, and Jewish Studies.  It was launched in 2011, thanks to a generous seed gift from The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation.

The Institute’s two initiatives -- the Berkeley Program on  Jewish Law and the Berkeley Program on Israeli Law, Economy and Society -- develop opportunities for research, programming, visiting scholars, colloquia and classes to strengthen academic inquiry and discourse across the Berkeley campus.

Berkeley Program on Jewish Law

The Berkeley Program on Jewish Law supports teaching, research, and programming on Jewish Law at Berkeley. The Program provides a forum for academic discourse on the history and contemporary relevance of Jewish legal studies, hosting speakers, visiting scholars, and resident fellows; providing support for graduate student research, and supporting the teaching of courses on Jewish and comparative law and ethics. Berkeley Program on Israeli Law, Economy and Society (ILES)

The Berkeley Program on Israeli Law, Economy and Society (ILES) is a cross-campus initiative supporting academic discourse and scholarship on the study of Israel, through course coordination, programming, and research support. The ILES Program provides a center for faculty and student research and discussion, a convener for speakers and conferences, a supporter of new research areas and classes, and an avenue for collaboration with Israeli universities and academics.
