Logistics

Meeting Spaces

Day 1: 2150 Shattuck Avenue, Penthouse Suite (SkyDeck)

Our first day we will be meeting off-campus in the "Chase Building," which is the tallest building in Berkeley and located immediately adjacent to the Downtown Berkeley BART stop. This is where our offices are located.

Day 2: Room 290, Hearst Memorial Mining Building.

Hearst Memorial Mining Building was designed by John Galen Howard and financed by Phoebe Apperson Hearst as a memorial to her husband George, "a plain honest man and good miner," silver tycoon, and U.S. senator. The building underwent a massive restoration, completed in 2002, that included cutting-edge seismic retrofitting to protect the building in the event of a major earthquake. In addition to its meticulously restored vaulted entrance gallery, elegant sculptured windows, and grand marble staircase, the building houses new laboratories for advanced experiments in computation, ceramics, metals, and polymers, as well as facilities to develop nanoscale and superconducting materials. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Hotels

We've arranged rooms at two different hotels for the meeting March 11-12, but each block will be held only temporarily. Please act quickly to secure the room of your choice at one of the following:

-Bancroft Hotel

This boutique hotel is located across the street from campus. The recently renovated, eco-friendly rooms include free wi-fi and breakfast, though they may be on the smaller side. Their website is here and their phone number is (510) 549-1000. We have 10 rooms reserved here, which will be held until Feb. 11.

The rate is $129.00. Parking is an additional $15/day (we're looking into how you might use your UC parking pass to park overnight on campus).

Ask for the "UCRD Hold."

Check out their reviews on Yelp here.

-Berkeley Lab Guest House

This modern hotel is up the hill at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and many rooms boast panoramic views of the Bay. Wi-fi, parking, coffee and tea, and shuttle service to campus and downtown is included. We have 15 rooms reserved here, which will be reserved until Feb. 25. Note that because it is up the hill, it is not within walking distance of anything, but the shuttle runs every 12 minutes. Breakfast is not included, but they told us that we can arrange a breakfast buffet for our guests or you can walk acros

s the street to the Lab's Bay View Café (and they're not kidding when they say that they have a Bay view, as long as there's no fog). Susan Carter recommended this option to us. They are holding a few rooms for the nights before and after the conference (3/10 and 3/13) for any of you who have additional business in the Bay Area while you are here.

The rates are:

Standard queen or double twin: $112  (some standard queens have a bay view)
Double Queen Bay View - $122
Studio Suite Bay View - $142
The booking code is B00L14.

You can check out their reviews on Yelp here.

-Other Options

We can also recommend the Shattuck Plaza Hotel, which is right downtown near the BART station and campus. The rooms are more expensive though; they were quoting us rates at well over $200/night when we looked into reserving a block there, but last time I checked on Kayak they were $183.

If you have trouble booking at one of the two options where we've reserved rooms, please let us know and we will help.

Transportation

Airports

There are two airports to choose from: San Francisco International (SFO) and Oakland (OAK).

Public Transportation

BART has a station downtown Berkeley. The "Downtown Berkeley" station exits into the plaza where our office building is and where the first day of the conference will take place. You can take BART directly from SFO ($9.25) or OAK (OAK is first via a shuttle bus to the BART station [shuttle bus is $3.00 cash/exact change only; BART fare is $2.50).

Parking on Campus

Certain permits from other UC campuses are honored on the UC Berkeley campus. See here for a list of which permits are valid. There is no parking on campus overnight (between 2 am and 5 am).
