New Chairholder Appointed: Samsung Distinguished Chair in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Research

Gerbrand Ceder was recently appointed the Samsung Distinguished Chair in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Research at UC Berkeley, where he develops novel materials for energy storage. Professor Ceder has worked over twenty years in Li-ion technology, and more recently also on alternative energy storage approaches, such as solid-state batteries, Na-ion and Mg-ion devices. He has published over 500 papers and holds more than 50 U.S. and foreign patents. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering of the US and the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Art. He is a Fellow of the Materials Research Society, the Metals, Minerals and Materials Society, the American Physical Society, and has received awards from the Electrochemical Society, the Materials Research Society, the Metals Minerals and Materials Society, and the International Battery Association. He is a Lead Scientist for new battery technologies at the Joint Center for Energy Storage (JCESR) of the US Department of Energy (DOE).  He has advised the US government on energy storage and on the role of computation in materials development, leading to the Materials Genome Initiative.
