Research Bio

Franco Zunino is a civil and environmental engineer whose research focuses on the mechanics of materials and the durability of concrete infrastructure. He studies how microstructural properties, hydration processes, and environmental exposure influence the long-term performance of cement-based materials. Zunino’s work combines experimental testing, modeling, and sustainability assessment to improve resilience and reduce the carbon footprint of construction materials. His research supports the development of greener, longer-lasting infrastructure systems.

He is a professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UC Berkeley and affiliated with the Energy Geosciences Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. At Berkeley, he mentors students in material science, sustainability, and infrastructure engineering.
