Intellectual Property & Technology Transfer
UC Berkeley’s breadth of top-tier programs in engineering, life sciences, business, law and other areas provides a powerful platform for innovation, entrepreneurship and technology commercialization.
The Office of Intellectual Property and Industry Research Alliances (IPIRA) is a "one-stop shop" for industry research partners, facilitating sponsored research collaborations and technology transfer. IPIRA includes the Office of Technology Licensing (OTL), which handles the patenting and licensing of intellectual property generated by Berkeley research, and the Industry Alliances Office (IAO), responsible for negotiating contracts and grants with industry partners.
IPIRA supports all members of the campus community and industry partners with
- industry affiliate program agreements
- industry sponsored research agreements
- material transfer and data use agreements
- patent and copyright licenses
- intellectual property protection and licensing
- start-up company licensing and equity agreements
- resources for startups
IPIRA staff work closely with the campus Sponsored Projects Office on research contracts and grants; and with the campus Foundation Relations and Corporate Philanthropy Office on gifts from industry partners.
Intellectual Property
The aim of University of California policies on the protection of intellectual property rights is to make available research to others for the public benefit, while providing recognition to individual researchers and inventors and encouraging the prompt and open dissemination of research results.
