Research Bio
Cybelle Fox is a sociologist whose research examines race, immigration, and the welfare state in the United States. She is best known for her award-winning book, Three Worlds of Relief (Princeton University Press, 2012), which analyzes the incorporation of blacks, Mexicans, and European immigrants in the American welfare system from the Progressive Era to the New Deal.
She is Class of 1944 Professor of Sociology at UC Berkeley. Her scholarship has been published in leading sociology, history, and political science journals, including the American Journal of Sociology, Journal of American History, Law & Social Inquiry, Social Forces, and Studies in American Political Development. Fox has received awards from the American Sociological Association, the American Political Science Association, and the Society for the Study of Social Problems. At Berkeley, she teaches courses on social policy, immigration, and social science methods, and mentors students studying inequality, public policy, race, and immigration.
