Energy Demand

Researchers at Berkeley helped develop the first energy-efficient dual-paned windows,
now used in buildings and homes world-wide for billions of dollars in energy savings.
The building shown here is a windows testing facility.

Developing low-emission vehicles, cleaner burning fuels, high-performance buildings, and sustainable transit systems is a crucial component of the overall effort to address our energy problems. UC Berkeley and Berkeley Lab scientists and engineers conduct pioneering research on energy use in a variety of fields. Special strengths include building efficiency, transportation, smart and low energy electronics and efforts to combine the use of heat and power.

Research activities are concentrated in several research centers and institutes on the UC Berkeley campus and at the Berkeley Lab.
