Research Bio
Kevin Washburn is a legal scholar specializing in federal Indian law, criminal law, gaming law, and law and policy in Native American communities. His research and public service focus on the relationship between tribal, federal, and state governments, as well as justice systems in Indian Country. Washburn has served in significant leadership roles, including as Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs at the U.S. Department of the Interior, where he oversaw the Bureau of Indian Affairs and related agencies. His academic work addresses sovereignty, jurisdiction, and governance in tribal contexts.
Washburn is a Professor in UC Berkeley's School of Law. His expertise is in federal Indian law, contemporary tribal governance, and criminal justice in Native American communities.
