Professor Kaes teaches courses in modern literature, literary and cultural theory, photography and cinema. His research concentrates on interdisciplinary and comparative aspects of Weimar culture and contemporary literature and film; literary theory and theory of cultural studies; film history and film theory. Professor Kaes is the author of the award-winning book “Shell Shock Cinema: Weimar Culture and the Wounds of War (Princeton University Press, 2011) and the co-editor of a sourcebook “The Promise of Cinema: German Film Theory, 1907-1933 (University of California Press, 2016). He is currently writing a book on the cultural crisis in Germany in the early 1930s.
