Research Description
Professor Kaes teaches courses in modern literature, literary and cultural theory, photography and cinema. His research concentrates on interdisciplinary and comparative aspects of Weimar culture and contemporary literature and film; literary theory and theory of cultural studies; film history and film theory. Professor Kaes is the author of the award-winning book “Shell Shock Cinema: Weimar Culture and the Wounds of War (Princeton University Press, 2011) and the co-editor of book prize-winning documentation “The Promise of Cinema: German Film Theory, 1907-1933 (University of California Press, 2016). He is currently writing a book on the cultural crisis in Germany in the early 1930s.
