Objective measures of the neural function of the retina have been discovered, in our laboratory, to predict future (one year forward) vascular complications in the retina of diabetics. Such vascular complications are the leading cause of significantly reduced vision and blindness in the working age population in the US. These prognostic indicators offer hope for the development of future pharmacological preventatives for the serious vision complications of diabetes in a society experiencing 'epidemic' prevalence of diabetes.
