The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research has overall managerial responsibility for Berkeley's research enterprise. It seeks to maintain a research environment that fosters creativity, collaboration and community. Its specific goals are to provide effective support for campus-wide research efforts; to advocate for research needs and resources; and to maximize the benefits of Berkeley's research to the scholarly community, and to the quality of life in the local community, the state, and the nation.
In support of these goals, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research:
- Supervises over 50 research units, six museums, and seven field stations;
- Administers the flow of research funding to the Berkeley campus;
- Oversees the compliance of campus research with federal, state and university regulations;
- Facilitates relations between University researchers and private industry for the benefit of society.
- Serves as an expert or lead development professional in a specialized area related to Biodiversity research with a special focus on the campus’ Natural History Museums, field stations, and related units, an environment that includes, or potentially includes, donors capable of making very significant contributions to the campus. Exercises a high level of independent judgment leading strategies that include complex gift discussions and interaction with donors capable of making significant contributions to the campus.
- Manage a portfolio of 100 - 125 major gift donor prospects that include the most influential, complex or highest rated donors, typically with the capacity to give $100,000 or more. Make at least 10 - 15 substantive contacts per month (e.g., significant moves that advance a relationship). Qualify major gift prospects and solicit gifts directly. Ensure that predetermined fundraising goals are met and raise at least $1.5M annually.
- Works in close collaboration with faculty leadership of the Natural History Museums, field stations and others to identify the most promising areas for philanthropic support. Develops, creates, writes, implements, and/or evaluates individualized plans and/or strategies for cultivation and solicitation of major gifts, gift planning, as well as corporate/foundation prospects (strategies typically require a high degree of innovation).
- Presents formal fundraising proposals to major donors and prospects or prepares senior faculty and campus leaders to present proposals. Stewards relationships with past and current supporters in collaboration with museum and field station leadership,
- Serves as campus resource for biodiversity research, interacting with prospects, donors, other fundraising staff and outside professionals to provide information, advice and counsel regarding specialized program(s).
- Creates, establishes and evaluates methods for building/maintaining prospect and volunteer constituencies and coordinates Advisory Board activities
- Analyzes needs and creates strategic and long-range plans for fundraising and other advancement programs and may have the authority to make commitments and precedent-setting decisions regarding program design, development, and procedures.
- May oversee the work of professional and support staff.
- Ensures that predetermined fundraising goals are met.
- Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
- Expert knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor and external relations, especially as related to biodiversity research, natural history museums and field stations
- Expert knowledge of all aspects of the campus, including current issues of concern for both the campus and throughout higher education generally.
- Expert knowledge of the campus including its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.
- Expert knowledge of all applicable laws, rules, regulations, institutional policies, et cetera.
- Outstanding written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including advanced political acumen, to establish and maintain good working relationships at all organizational levels and with outside constituencies, including donors and volunteers.
- Expert skill in making persuasive and compelling presentations of campus goals/objectives and in securing gifts.
- Expert analytical, critical thinking, problem recognition/avoidance/resolution skills.
- Expert project/program management skills, including skill in setting and meeting program/project goals and objectives within budget and time constraints.
- Skills to meet or exceed fundraising goals and objectives.
- Advanced degree and/or CFRE a plus
