Research Expertise and Interest

nonlinear analysis of structures, finite element analysis, seismic response simulation, seismic evaluation of structures by computer analysis

Research Description

Filip C. Filippou is a Professor of the Graduate School in Structural Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.  He teaches and conducts research in nonlinear analysis of structures. He develops simulation models for the response of structural components of reinforced concrete, steel and steel-concrete composite structures under seismic loading conditions. His models are widely used in OpenSEES. He is also the developer of the Matlab toolbox FEDEASLab that is used around the world for teaching and research in the simulation of nonlinear structural response.

Filip C. Filippou received a Dipl. Ing. degree in Civil Engineering from the Technical University of Munich in 1978 and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 1983. He has been on the faculty of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley since 1983 and served as department Vice-Chair from 1999 to 2003.
