The Vice Chancellor for Research is pleased to announce the 2013/14 round of awards for the Innovation Seed Fund in Energy and Climate Research, a program funded by the Berkeley Energy & Climate Institute (BECI) that is based in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research.

For 2013/14 the Innovation Seed Fund seeks proposals that will advance UC Berkeley research in the renewable energy and energy efficiency domain.  There is a special interest in multi-disciplinary projects that address current gaps in the scientific, technological and policy areas of Berkeley's renewable energy portfolio as well as projects that will further define the frontiers of energy science and policy and have strong potential for scalability and implementation.
The call for proposals encourages focus in the following areas:

  • “Accelerating Impacts on Energy and Climate Change through Policy”
Developing strategies, policies and programs which accelerate or promote the precipitation of impacts on climate change, energy efficiency or further engagement from stakeholders.
  • “Technologies for a Lower Carbon Future”
Research and development of technologies pertaining to alternative energies, energy efficiency, cleaner fossil fuels or energy storage.
  • "Reducing Carbon Emissions Today”
Research and development of carbon capture, carbon sequestration and scrubber technology or the development of industry engagement programs which directly curb an industrial partner’s energy consumption or carbon emissions.
  • “Developing Resilience and Adaptation Strategies for Climate Change”
Development of climate assessments, integrative climate modeling (including atmospheric or hydrological) and forecasting technologies which can be applied to the protection of societal interests and assets, such as: food and water supply, transportation systems, the urban environment, and grid security from climate change and extreme weather events.

The application deadline was Sunday, October 20, 2013. A multi-disciplinary team of faculty will evaluate the submissions and select proposals each of which will be awarded up to $80K--$120K per year with the possibility of renewal for one more year. Please submit your application materials online here. Please contact swihera@berkeley.edu with any questions you may have.
