Director, Institute for South Asia Studies

The Institute for South Asia Studies (ISAS) is seeking a new Director, effective July 1, 2017. We invite nominations of tenured Berkeley faculty who are highly qualified and willing to serve. The candidate should have a well-established research and professional reputation as well as leadership and administrative abilities.

About the Institute for South Asia Studies

Berkeley's Institute for South Asia Studies is one of the world's premier institutes for research and program development related to South Asia, a region comprised of the nations of India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Tibet and the Maldives. The Institute works with faculty members, graduate students, members of the community, private institutions, and non-profit organizations to strengthen the study of the region and inspire new generations of South Asia scholars.  In pursuit of these goals, ISAS actively supports the teaching of faculty and graduate students initiates and administers research projects, organizes and hosts lectures and conferences, develops financial resources, encourages interdisciplinary and comparative studies, creates outreach programs in coordination with local schools, furnishes grants and fellowships for language study, publishes language textbooks and monographs, and assists in the organization of cultural and community activities. ISAS supports a wide variety of research in the social sciences, the humanities, and relevant professional fields.

Nomination Process and Desirable Candidate Qualifications

The Director should have the leadership qualities to provide interdisciplinary vision, foster innovative research among faculty and students, promote outreach to policy-making constituencies, sustain and expand financial resources with the collaboration and support of the Institute's National Board of Advisors, and manage a talented professional staff. This appointment provides teaching relief and additional compensation.

Upon receipt of nominations, the appointed search advisory committee will request that the top nominees submit a letter of interest by February 21, 2017.
