Director, Institute of Government Studies

The Institute of Governmental Studies (IGS) is seeking a new Director effective July 1, 2017. We invite nominations of tenured Berkeley faculty who are highly qualified and willing to serve. The candidate should have a well established research and professional reputation as well as leadership and administrative abilities. This appointment is for an initial five year term and provides teaching relief and additional compensation.

The IGS is the University of California’s longest standing center for interdisciplinary study and research in politics, government, and public policy. IGS has active affiliated faculty from many disciplines, with a core group in Political Science. IGS works with undergraduates, graduate students, and scholars across the campus and around the world to further the University’s goals of teaching, research, and public service. IGS has pursued a broad mission that in addition to distinguished research and faculty led workshops and colloquia includes research support for graduate students, outreach efforts to policymakers and the public, a publications program, a large undergraduate internship program emphasizing public service, and a specialized library that serves scholars inside and outside the campus.

The Director should have a distinguished record of scholarship in Governmental Studies or related field, the leadership qualities to provide outward looking vision, foster innovative interdisciplinary research among faculty and students, promote outreach to policy making constituencies, sustain and expand financial resources in collaboration and support of the Institute’s National Advisory Council, demonstrate a commitment to support Berkeley’s Strategic Plan for Equity, Inclusion and Diversity, and manage a talented professional staff.

Please submit nominations by completing the online nomination form as soon as possible but no later than February 17, 2017. Self nominations are welcome. The appointed search advisory committee will not be provided the names of those who submit nominations or know whether individuals have been self nominated. All nominations will be reviewed by the search advisory committee that will select the top 3-5 nominees to solicit interest in becoming a formal candidate, and through the interview process, in becoming a formal candidate, and through the interview process, recommend 2-3 candidates to the Vice Chancellor for Research for final selection.
