Director, Archaeological Research Facility

The Archaeological Research Facility is seeking a new Director, with the anticipated start date of July 1, 2017.  We invite nominations of qualified tenured Berkeley faculty who are  highly motivated to assume this leadership position.  The ideal candidate should have an established professional reputation, leadership and administrative abilities, and the willingness to develop and pursue an aggressive fundraising strategy through competitive grant programs and philanthropic sources.  This appointment is for an initial five year term, at the discretion of the Vice Chancellor for Research, and provides compensation for the duration of the appointment period.

Established in 1949 as the California Archaeological Survey, and later renamed in 1960 as the Archaeological Research Facility,  this Organized Research Unit was designed to promote and support multidisciplinary research, teaching, and outreach in the field of archaeology and related disciplines.   Its current mission is to provide support for archaeological research across campus, including laboratory facilities and equipment, and to promote collaborative interdisciplinary research through an endowment that supports faculty and student research, an open-access monograph series, lectures and colloquia, and public outreach activities.  As a field of research, archaeology is inherently interdisciplinary and may involve research collaborations among natural scientists, social scientists and/or humanists,  and  is practiced on campus by scholars who hold faculty and/or other research positions in a variety of units, ranging from Classics to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

The Director should have the leadership qualities necessary to develop and implement a new vision for Berkeley archaeology and increase visibility of the campus’s contributions to interdisciplinary issues of importance to society and the research community at large.   She/he will foster innovative collaborative research among faculty, students and other research affiliates, promote the campus through educational and community-based outreach programs,  and increase financial resources to support existing and new research programs and activities.  The Director must also demonstrate a commitment to U.C. Berkeley’s “Principles of Community.”

Please submit nominations by completing the online nomination form as soon as possible and no later than March 2, 2017.   Self-nominations are welcome.  Upon receipt of nominations, the appointed Search Advisory Committee will select the top 3-5 nominees to solicit interest in becoming a formal candidate, and forward the top 2-3 to the Vice Chancellor for Research for final selection.
